Το κίνημα της ανοιχτής πρόσβασης κερδίζει συνεχώς έδαφος σε όλο τον κόσμο, και ήδη ένας μεγάλος αριθμός Πανεπιστημίων έχει υιοθετήσει τις αρχές της ανοιχτής πρόσβασης. Τα πνευματικά δικαιώματα αποτελούν ένα σημαντικό ζήτημα της ανοιχτής πρόσβασης λόγω της ηθικής διάστασης του ακαδημαϊκού και ερευνητικού έργου καθώς και της ιδιαίτερης φύσης του διαδικτύου. Μια από τις δημοφιλέστερες άδειες χρήσης για το περιεχόμενο ανοιχτής πρόσβασης αποτελούν οι άδειες Creative Commons.

The unique value of cultural heritage has long been recognized together with the need for accurate and detailed information in order to preserve and manage cultural heritage material. Any organization whose mission includes promoting access to information is aware of the value of digital collections. For the last few years, digital technology has become very familiar in cultural organizations, providing enhanced access to the content.

Today the Open Access movement gains more and more followers. The Library and Information Services at the Cyprus University of Technology has defined Open Access as one of its main strategies. Considering the current economic crisis, Open Access appears to be a solution to the reduction of funds at the academic institutions. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the perception and reaction of the academic community of the Cyprus University of Technology towards Open Access.

Throughout the world, academic libraries have come to the conclusion that the development of institutional repositories must be one of their major goals. Institutional repositories are the means for libraries to provide access to the research product of the academic community and also to promote open access. The publication of the research results in open access journals assists in the global diffusion of this information. The open access movement is becoming very popular among the academic institutions. Today more than 320 organizations have signed the Berlin declaration on Open Access.

Today an increasing number of researchers and scientists follow Open Access. Open Access is a movement that offers researchers and the academic community the opportunity to share and access academic information freely and immediately. The Library and Information Services at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) has defined Open Access as one of its main strategies. An author fund has been established since 2013, with the financial support of a pharmaceutical company, in order to promote and support Open Access.

Η ανάπτυξη των ιδρυματικών καταθετριών κυρίως με τη χρήση των λογισμικών ανοικτού κώδικα και η καθιέρωση τους ως ένα σημαντικό εργαλείο καταγραφής της έρευνας μέσα σε ένα τοπικό και διεθνές περιβάλλον όπου ο ανταγωνισμός αναμεσά στα εκπαιδευτικά και ερευνητικά ιδρύματα είναι έντονος. Όπως επίσης και η προώθηση της ανοικτής πρόσβασης και των επιστημονικών περιοδικών ανοικτής πρόσβασης ως εναλλακτικό μοντέλο έναντι των εμπορικών εκδοτών.
